SIDS essays Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) has always been a topic I wondered about but knew very little information on. I was about fifteen years old when I first became familiar with SIDS. Waking up to the flashing red and blue lights as the sound of the loud siren became closer and closer, I looked out my window and noticed the ambulance was at the house next door. I quickly jumped up and put on my robe and house shoes. I opened my bedroom door and ran down the hall to my mothers room. I shouted, Mom and told her there was an ambulance outside. She grabbed my hand and rushed out the door. There were other neighbors outside by then trying to see what was going on. We watched from our porch as the medical workers raced back and forth to the ambulance getting the equipment that was needed. My mom told me to stay on the porch while she tried to see what was going on. She walked across the street and started asking the other neighbors if they knew of anything or if anyone had been h urt. The little old lady with the gray hair from the house down the street replied, The Johnsons new born, Alex, isnt breathing. Not knowing exactly what all this was about, I saw my mother walking back towards the porch as she wiped the tears that were running down the sides of her nose. At that moment, I knew something wasnt right. Repeatedly, I asked, is everything okay? She rapped her arms tightly around me, Theres something wrong with Amandas little brother, she said. My stomach dropped. All I could think about was the worst. Amanda was my best friend and she was Mr. and Mrs. Johnsons oldest daughter. What could be wrong, I thought to myself. I thought Alex was perfectly healthy. The medical workers rushed to their vehicles and shortly after, the Johnsons came walking out the door. Military vs. Militia Military vs. Militia Military vs. Militia By Mark Nichol What’s the difference between the military and a militia? The distinction is generally between formal and regular service members and auxiliary or irregular personnel, but the latter term is less precise. More precisely and comprehensively, the military is the entirety of a country’s designated personnel, matà ©riel (as opposed to materials), and infrastructure as organized for defense. A militia can be a subcategory of the military, consisting of personnel generally deployed only during emergencies though in some nations, the term refers to all citizens eligible to be called to military service but it may refer, alternatively, to reserve forces, law-enforcement entities, or privately financed and equipped groups. Both words are derived from the Latin term miles, meaning â€Å"soldier†: military stems from militaris, meaning â€Å"of soldiers or war,† of â€Å"military service,† or â€Å"warlike,† and militia is a direct borrowing of a word meaning â€Å"military service, warfare.† Paramilitary (the prefix means â€Å"related to† or â€Å"resembling†) refers to armed forces organized more or less according to military protocols but not necessarily official or authorized. The term, like militia, is ambiguous, as it could refer, depending on the context, to a body of armed personnel ranging in degrees of legitimacy from national police to guerrillas. Other words descended from the Latin miles include militant, in noun form referring to a (usually unofficial) combatant or as an adjective meaning â€Å"fighting† or â€Å"aggressive† in both military and nonmilitary contexts, and militate. Both these words developed from the Latin word military â€Å"serve as a soldier,† but the latter acquired a connotation of â€Å"counteract† or â€Å"have a negative effect on.† In the United States, the military consists of the following branches of the armed forces: the US Army, the US Navy, the US Marine Corps, and the US Air Force; in time of war, the US Coast Guard can be attached to the navy. Subsidiary elements, considered militia, include the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard, plus the Army Reserve, the Navy Reserve, the Marine Corps Forces Reserve, the Air Force Reserve, and the Coast Guard Reserve, which collectively constitute the National Guard of the United States. The relationship between pressure and airspeed is that the function of calibrated airspeed is part of the compressible impact pressure. It is also important to note that, at sea level pressure, the rate of equivalent airspeed is equal to calibrated airspeed. 1. Ida B. Wells Ida B. Wells (1862-1931) was a newspaper editor and journalist who went on to lead the American anti-lynching crusade. Working closely with both African-American community leaders and American suffragists, Wells worked to raise gender issues within the "Race Question" and race issues within the "Woman Question." Wells was born the daughter of slaves in Holly Springs, Mississippi, on July 16, 1862. During Reconstruction, she was educated at a Missouri Freedman's School, Rust University, and began teaching school at the age of fourteen. In 1884, she moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where she continued to teach while attending Fisk University during summer sessions. In Tennessee, especially, she was appalled at the poor treatment she and other African-Americans received. After she was forcibly removed from her seat for refusing to move to a "colored car" on the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad, the Tennessee Supreme Court rejected her suit against the railroad fo r violating her civil rights in 1877. This event and the legal struggle that followed it, however, encouraged Wells to continue to oppose racial injustice toward African-Americans. She took up journalism in addition to school teaching, and in 1891, after she had written several newspaper articles critical of the educational opportunities afforded African-American students, her teaching contract was not renewed. The tone is set, he Is ridiculing the romantics, who see nature as something beautiful and good.The rest of stanza 1 the narrator is saying that it is impossible to be in harmony with nature. To imagine that we, humans can be â€Å"like nature strong, like nature cool†. Stanza 2: â€Å"Know, man hath all which Nature hath, but more. † – the human race has the same attributes as nature (cruelty and stubbornness) but humans are also able to feel pity and remorse, which Is both good and bad. â€Å"Man Is sick of blood† Stanza 3: â€Å"Nature is fickle, man hath need of rest;† Here is another contrast between nature and man. Man needs to be able to rest, but as long as nature is unpredictable, which It is and always will, man will not be able to rest. Nature forgives no debt, and fears no grave† Again the narrator points out that man and nature are incompatible. Man does, in most cases, fear the grave and man are able to forgive debts. That is what makes us human however it also makes us weak. A weakness, which isn't, in any way, present In nature. It links up very well with the next line that says, â€Å"Man would be mild, and with safe conscience blest† It's not that nature is evil; it just doesn't hold the attributes which makes humans human. Nature has no conscience and it's not mild, tauter does not forgive because it does not Judge, nature is cruel because it shows no mercy.The three last lines of stanza 3 sums up the message of the poem. â€Å"Man must begin, know this, where Nature ends; Nature and man can never be fast friends† – Nature has granted us with a frame for our lives it's our Job as humans to build up our homes and grow our fields in order to survive. Nature is a heartless foundation on which we must build our existence. â€Å"Fool, If thou cants pass her, rest her slave! † the final line of the poem says that If you arena strong enough to control ND use nature for your own good you will remain a slave to nature. You have to provide for yourselves. The poem is a tribute to the industrialists society where man has managed to enslave nature. This view on nature is very much the opposite of how the romantics felt about nature. In romantic literature nature was praised as the place where inspiration and life sprang from.

W.E.B Dubois-Prejudice and Discrimination Since the beginning of history around the 1600’s slavery was common, and people were used to pick crops and do other things their owners required of them. Slavery lasted till around the late 1800’s when the 13th amendment was adopted and slavery was abolished. In the 20th and 21st century is when African Americans were starting to be treated as first class citizens. Today one of the most powerful men in the United States is an African American; he holds the highest seat in office. He is the commander and chief, President Obama. Over a century ago people would have thought this to be impossible. W.E.B Dubois was known for many things from a historian, novelist, journalist, editor, political advocate and a sociologist (Horne). Dubois was known for his writing and had novels anywhere from fiction to nonfiction. He served as a founder and a principal operative of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and he was a leader of the council of African Affairs (Horne). Being born a free man, but battling prejudice and discrimination Dubois did most of his studies on being African American in a predominately white world.
